Bio:
I had wanted a basset hound ever since I was four years old. My uncle owned two, and I felt a good connection to the breed. After working through college, knowing I couldn’t afford the time nor the money for a dog, I decided to begin the search.

I looked for a suitable basset hound through multiple rescue organizations to no avail. One Sunday morning in March, 2011, I decided to scan some more local rescues online, and Callahan was a brand-new listing on South Bay Purebred Rescue. A phone call and six hours later, I met Callahan and his foster parent at a pet store. After taking him for a quick walk around the store, and after he stopped, looked up at me, and tilted his head as if saying, “Where to now?,” I knew we had finally found each other after so many years.

He joined my home on March 11, his new official birthday, and he has been my loyal, jovial sidekick since then. He had many separation issues when he first arrived, and we have been diligently working with a trainer since day one. He now exhibits none of his previous issues, and he is fitting in well with his new routine. We still have our bad days, but the good ones more than make up for the bad. It’s hard to imagine why anyone would relinquish a dog who walks over to you while you’re on the couch, sits down, and bats his big brown eyes until he winds up curled in a twisted, elongated, and totally content ball at your feet. He definitely makes my day!

Arrival Story:
I wanted a playmate for my beagle, and knew I wanted another hound. I responded to an ad for a man who was desperate to find a new home for his basset puppy, and after I saw her, skin and bones, filthy, tied up by a rope in a back yard, I knew that even if I wasn’t sure about keeping her I had to get her out of there! It only took a night before I realized she was meant to be in my home

I met Gertie’s parent, Ethel and Norton, at the vet hospital where I was the groomer. Her human parents knew I was missing my recently departed Border Collie Shelby, and offered me pick of the litter. Gert was 17 days old when I chose her. Bassets are notoriously hard to train, but she was and is very smart and loves to please everyone. What I love is to see how she makes everyone smile when they see her coming!
