It's been 2 years since I've written to you. I think today's a good day to start writing again because it's my darling baby boy Harley's 5th birthday.
When I think about my life in San Francisco (9 years, omg), the first 4 were really kind of a blur. I feel like my life really began 5 years ago when Harley joined my family. He is my soul mate, and so far he has given me the best years of my life.
Harley's 5 years old today. They say the life span of a boston terrier is 10-12 years. That means almost half his life could likely be over. Losing my pets is my biggest fear but it makes me cherish every day I have with them and motivates me to give them the best life possible.
Did you read the New York times article that came out a few weeks ago about how dogs are people too? Well, it was great.
People are always impressed with Harley when they meet him - they can't believe how well-mannered he is, how smart he is and supposedly "calm". What they don't understand is that their own dogs have the same potential as Harley. Dogs are smart. If you are patient and give them the tools to succeed, they will make you very proud.
So anyway, 5 years is huge for me. Five years ago I decided I wanted a dog in my life. Four years ago I came up with the idea for Project DOG - though I didn't know exactly what it would be, 3 years ago I started the social media campaign, 2 years ago I quit my job, found and photographed 300 dogs, raised $24K and got my book printed, and I spent last year trying to figure out what happened to my books and figuring a way to get them back.
I guess I never really told you what happened to my books. I don't want to bore you with that now but I'll just say that over a year later I finally have my freaking books. I've been extra inspired lately to get things going again, and I've officially emerged from the black hole that has sucked my Project DOG soul dry for the past two years.
So like Jerry Blank (Amy Sedaris) from Strangers With Candy (one of my favorite shows) famously said, "OLD HABITS, NEW BEGINNINGS". Project DOG is off to a new start.
Hope you're doing well... would love a ping back if you have a sec, haven't heard from you in a while.
