Do you hate me? It's been almost 2 months since my last letter, and I feel absolutely terrible about it. But alas, I'm here and ready to rock n roll! I dont want to bore you with the details of what went down before Christmas but I will tell you that I struck bad by the plague of a lifetime and that I was basically bed ridden for about 3 weeks.
The last exciting thing to happen to Project DOG was the interview with Cesar Millan in December. I am still working on transcribing it and I will have that ready to show you soon, promise! I do have some REALLY exciting news to share with you though, I think you will like it.
In January, nominations opened up for the Shorty Awards online - basically the "Oscars of Twitter". People nominate their favorite people on Twitter in various categories and then the top 6 nominees in each category are selected as "finalists". Well guess what. About 2.5 weeks before the nominations ended, I looked at Project DOG's status and we were 28th. The number of nominees was growing and at that time was around 800. I figured, if I'm 28th right now out of about 800, there's no reason why I can't be in the top 6. So I made it my goal and forced myself to tailor my entire existence around achieving the top 6. Not only did we reach the Top 6, but we finished in FIRST PLACE!! That's right bootie bootie, WE FINISHED #1!!!
Today they finally announced the *official* top 6 finalists in each category, and Project DOG was listed first in the Art category list! Here are a few screenshots just for posterity's sake!
This header image is from the Project DOG profile page on the Shorty Awards Website. We finished the nominations with 694 official votes (they must have removed 7 of them because it was 700 before, oh well).
This image above is a small screenshot taken from the Shorty Awards Blog page - the official "finalist" listing! ...HOO DAT in #1?!
This last screenshot is the Art section from the Shorty Awards homepage. Isn't that INSANE?!!! So now that the nominations are finally over and I can get a few more min of shut eye, now I have to worry about the actual event night!! Unfortunately they don't announce the winner beforehand, even if you won and youre out of state/country... so it's a $1,000+ shot in the dark that I'm willing to take. I feel like I've come this far to not even be there if I won! ...if WE won.
This whole nomination period really surprised me and what people had to say about Project DOG really inspired me to make this the best project it can possibly be. Here are some of my favorite nominations:
Why didn't you run in the Shorty Awards? Tell me why! This could've been the perfect opportunity for you to meet me if we were both nominees!! Justin Bieber even made the top 6 in Charity as did Dave Ramsey in #finance. I hope Dave Ramsey is at the awards ceremony because I'm a student of Financial Peace University (FPU), LOL ... the only way I'll ever be able to able to inch toward my dream of self employment! Like Dave says, "you have to live like no one else now, so you can live like no one else later". GAZELLE INTENSITY!
Anyway, the Shorty Awards are a big deal to me, and everyone else on Twitter who follows Project DOG. I really do owe it to Twitter because without it, there would be no Project DOG. Most people use Facebook first to drive traffic to Twitter and other smaller microblogging sites, but I do the opposite. I tweet to drive traffic to Facebook and my website, and I find that it works way better than depending only on Facebook. Thanks to twitter I've really come to understand how to effectively communicate with people and instead of reading about how to achieve success and practice social media "best practices", I'm actually doing it. Hands on and figuring it out myself. No mashable articles until after the fact, and by then they're more like, "yeah duh." You know what I mean, youre a good tweeter too.
Yesterday I also took the jump onto crazy train and gave Harley permission to tweet. Harley's twitter is taking off and he's really a natural at it (I wonder where he gets it from). He's only been online now for 1 day and already has 80 friends, go figure! I'm glad I waited this long before letting him have an account because now I understand what it's all about and I can watch him to make sure he doesn't get into any trouble. If you want to follow him, he is @mrharleydavid. He's already going after the ladies... teenagers!
Well I think that's about it for now. I will keep you posted on the Shorty Awards. I'm really excited and I can't wait to get back to NYC!!
